Voiding a prior year payroll check

Modified on Fri, Jun 20 at 2:56 PM

Most Districts  utilize the Unclaimed Property Administration (UPA) to manage payroll checks that are not cashed by former employees.    The Unclaimed Property Administration (UPA) recovers and records abandoned or lost intangible and tangible property. The UPA’s goal is to return this property to the rightful owner and/or heirs. The New Jersey Unclaimed Property Statute ensures that property owners never relinquish the right to this property and the UPA only acts as a custodian until the property is returned.  The only entry that can be processed in SchoolFi for unclaimed payroll checks is to change the status of the check to void.  This will not effect the employee's W2 nor will it record any financial transactions in SchoolFi.

Some Districts choose to change the status of the unclaimed check to void and create an Other Reported W2 to record the financial impact of the unclaimed check on the employee's current W2.  If this is a process that your district wants to follow, the transaction(s) are recorded on the Other Reported W2 Tab.
